Filipinos are top Multiply users

Filipinos are top Multiply users

By DAVID DIZON
abs-cbnNEWS.com

A third of the traffic going to social networking site Multiply, or approximately 300 million page views, is coming from Filipino users worldwide, top Multiply executives said Wednesday.

Multiply president and founder Peter Pezaris said Multiply gets about a billion page views a month, a third of which comes from Filipinos in different parts of the globe. This makes Filipinos the number one users of Multiply, ranking higher than users in the United States where the site is based.

Pezaris said the Filipino culture's emphasis on family and relationships is the main reason why the social networking site is so popular in the Philippines.

"The reason why we are popular here, I think, relates to that notion of friends and family, the fact that our service is much more focused on connecting you with people that you know in real life rather than introducing you to people that you don’t know. It’s a site that really plays into the cultural phenomenon that’s here in the Philippines," he told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

David Hersh, Multiply vice-president for business development, also said the integration of unlimited photosharing in Multiply is very attractive to Filipino Internet users. Most Filipino Multiply users are female, in the 18-25 age bracket, and average about 160 Multiply page views a month.

"Filipinos are just rabid consumers of content. It’s amazing. Those 160 page views aren’t just fluff page views of people bouncing from profile to profile. It’s people consuming photos, videos and blogs from the people in their world. It’s meaningful activity. It reflects the deep level of engagement that we have with our user base especially here in the Philippines," Pezaris said.

Local partner

For the Philippine market, Multiply recently partnered with ABS-CBN Interactive to tap local advertisers and launch mobile services for Filipino Multiply users. (Disclosure: Abs-cbnNEWS.com is run by ABS-CBN Interactive.)

Paolo Pineda, ABS-CBN Interactive managing director, said the company is the exclusive reseller of advertising on Multiply for the Philippines. He said ABS-CBN Interactive will also be actively campaigning to build Multiply's user base in the country.

One of the successful Multiply communities launched by ABS-CBN Interactive centered on the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus show. The show now has two sites - the official one where profiles and schedules are posted and a Multiply site where PBB fans can go online.

Pineda said one local call center that advertised on Multiply was able to attract recruits through its Multiply community site.

"It’s more of these community building efforts online for Filipinos worldwide. We want to really try to populate the brand and get more people to understand it and work on the advertising and get the brands to see that this is really a safe place to put your brand in," he said.

Real-world relationships

Hersh said Multiply currently has nine million registered users worldwide, of which 2.2 million are Filipinos. He said that while the growth of Multiply has been slower compared to other social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, it is the real-world relationships in Multiply that sets it apart and ensures its longevity.

"If your online social network is full of people that you have no real world connection to, there’s very little reason to keep you there and it’s very easy for you to switch. But on Multiply, it’s your real-world social network online and your content and it’s the discussion that goes on around that content that’s going to keep you coming back," he said.

Adds Pezaris: "It’s closer, deeper relationships which enables the sharing of personal, meaningful content to you and the continuing sharing of that is the personal documentation of your life online. Over a period of time, you build up this history like a living scrapbook of what’s happening in your life and it’s a collaborative effort because while you add to it, all your friends and family add to it also and that’s what really develops the long-term value."

NAFVE SALUTES VETERANS ON MEMORIAL DAY; CONTINUES CAMPAIGN TO SECURE PASSAGE OF FILIPINO WWII VETERANS LEGISLATION

National Coalition Affirms Commitment to Filipino Veterans Legislation, Issues Action Alert during Congressional Memorial Day Recess

Washington, DC- The National Alliance for Filipino Veterans Equity (NAFVE) marks Memorial Day this weekend by recognizing the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served and are serving our country in our
military. NAFVE's support for all soldiers past and present who put on the uniform comes as it continues its push to pass legislation for Filipino WWII veterans this year.

"NAFVE and its members stand in solidarity with the chorus of voices around the country calling for passage of this important legislation, " said NAFVE Co-Chair Jon Melegrito. "In partnership with the Filipino community
nationwide, and our allies who are joining our campaign, we are working in unison to pass Filipino WWII veterans in this Congress."

During the week of Memorial Day, members of the House of Representatives will be in their local districts. NAFVE is encouraging its members and allies to approach their members directly in their localities and talk to them about the importance of this bill. In Washington, DC, NAFVE continues to talk to members of Congress and their staff on both sides of the aisle.

"NAFVE is committed to working with our champions and supporters in the House of Representatives to convey the urgency of our communities on this issue," said Lillian Galedo, NAFVE Co-Chair. "House Veterans Affairs
Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Assistant to the Speaker Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Mike Honda (D-CA) and Republican champion Representative Darrell Issa (R-C) and their staffs have been working with us to make sure that this bill is able to move forward with a solid strategy for success. With Memorial Day upon us and June 12 as Philippine
Independence Day nearing, we urge Congress to pass this bill without delay."

"We have always known that the key to this bill's passage is securing a bipartisan majority," said Ben de Guzman, NAFVE Co-Chair. "During this Memorial Day recess, our strategy includes mobilizing our partners in the field while we push from Washington, DC. There is opposition to this bill, so it will be important that we all continue our efforts until our job on behalf of our veterans is done." NAFVE's Action Alert to its members is included below.

The National Alliance represents over 20 local, national and international organizations committed to securing full equity for Filipino World War II Veterans. All the groups have been part of a 60-year campaign to restore to Filipino WWII veterans their rightful claim to U.S. veterans' status and recognition for their bravery in defending the United States during WWII.

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us CHICAGO, Illinois – Manny Pacquiao and David Diaz will let their fists to do the talking.

After staging two press conferences for the fighters last week, media handlers decided to keep their mouths shut and hold a public workout on Saturday in Berkeley, California (Sunday in the Philippines).

The workouts will take place at the West Wind School on University Avenue, starting with Diaz at at 11 a.m. (2 a.m., of the following day in the Philippines), followed by Pacquiao at noon (3 a.m. in the Philippines).

This schedule was announced by Bernie Bahrmasel, publicity handler for Diaz.

Last May 13 (May 14 in the Philippines), Pacquiao, 29, and Diaz, 31, held their first joint press conference at Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, California.

This was followed by another joint press conference last May 21st at Lalo’s Restaurant here in Chicago and a public pep rally at nearby Federal Plaza downtown, where hundreds of Filipinos, Filipino-Americans, Mexicans, and Mexican-Americans listened to their remarks and asked for autographs.

Pacquiao and Diaz will face each other on June 28 (June 29 in the Philippines) at the Mandalay Bay Resorts and Casino Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada,

Pacquiao (46-3-2, 34 KO’s) will attempt to become the first Asian or Filipino to win four world championships in four different weight divisions if he beats Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KO’s), whose World Boxing Council lightweight belt is on the line.

The public workouts on Saturday will give the public a chance to size up the moves of the two boxers, as well as ask for autographs.

This will be the first time that the public is going to get a preview of the workout of both boxers since the fight was announced.

It was reported in the Filipino media that Diaz did not want to show his wares before the Filipino photographers and videographers in Chicago.

But Diaz denied the report. He even invited this reporter to take photos and videos at his JABB gym in Chicago.

Their public workout is believed to be the last promotional appearance of the two boxers before

Philippine Adventur: 2008

Philippine Adventur: 2008
I just returned from a 2 ½ week trip to the Philippines visiting family and seeking adventure. To celebrate my experiences and life growth, I have put together this dynamic blog entry filled with links,
video, photos, and music. The DaCocoS website, bolg, and videos are an artistic expression of my experience in the Philippines and the love I have for my family. To see still images that appears in the videos see: PhotoBen750:Picasa
I will progressively post more details about my Philippine experiences as I put them together, but for now I will briefly introduce the story that changed my life and a few videos and pictures of special moments from my recent trip.

Please Visit:

http://dacocos.blogspot.com

In May of 2004 I was blessed with a very unique experience of being able to reconnect with my family in the Philippines after about a 20 year
break in communication and lack of current contact information. I took what information I had and located the residence of the last address I had for my Father in the Philippines.
When I arrived at the address there was family of renters that were staying at the address. I explained my story and said, I was

looking for my father and grandmother that had lived there about 20 before. The man that was living there did not know my family, but did know some in the neighborhood that might. I left my contact information and I went back to my hotel.
That evening I got message from the man I met earlier that a lady that when to school with my Dad was going to give me a call and she might have information to help me. By the next day I got a call form the
classmate of my father and she had the phone number to the house where my Father and his family lived. She had called them and made sure it was okay to give me their number and she had given them my information.

At first I was a little scared to call. I did not want to cause and trouble and I was not sure what the situation was like. My only hope was to just be the person I am and all will turn out

okay. So I gave them a call… I believe it was my sister Madel who answered the phone first. I could tell there was a hesitation of first mixed feelings for a stranger only known through passed stories. She let me know that I had 3 sisters and a brother. She also informed me that Lola was there and she wanted to see me.
With in the next two days I was checked out of my hotel and living with them at there house. By then I had talked to my Father on the phone twice with in that time since he was away from home working on a ship. Life was moving
fast and a lot of changes were taking place in all our lives. The next week flew by and I would only have a chance to start a bond with my brother and sisters that would have to continue over the internet if it had any chance of growing over the great distance.
Over the next two years I would occasionally exchange message over email or yahoo instant messenger. We also kept in
contact through Friendster as well. I was even able to recieve a bunch of phone calls and texts from my father when he was in port or close by a country where he could connect to sent text. In May of 2006 I would have my next opportunity to return to the Philippines. This time my Father would be home and I would see him for the first time.
From the first moment I met him, it was like every thing just fell into place were it was supposed to be.
